Fished the Princes out of Virg's Landing. It was an afternoon bite. We got our first jig strike at 7am, I threw in a nice sardine on the slide and hooked up right away. I was fishing 20lb f.c. and broke off after a great 100 foot run. Only 2 (big) fish were landed on that stop. Next jig stop was 15 minutes later, same thing, broke off on 20lb, now I was pissed! Then we trolled for 5 hours w/o a single strike.

12:30 pm next jig stop, I switched to 30lb and hooked up to a nice 30 lber on the slide(the stink was off). Back to the stern for another 30lber. Back to the stern again for another???, broke off on 30lb. This was a good stop with almost all fish between 25 and 35lbs. One guy pulled in a beast for the jackpot at over 50lbs. This was the biggest albie I have ever seen. I would say 20 fish were lost and that stop alone.

Next troller was me and I stopped the boat with a biggie 30lb plus fish. After that it was wide open for about 45 minutes. I got two more bait fish that were both over 30lbs. These fish were big and mean, every fight was over 10 minutes. I tried the megabait over and over on every stop for nada. The sardines were the hot ticket. I was fishing 1/4 ounce sliders above a swivel, with glow in the dark beads and #2 hooks.

I like this boat, perfect for 20 guys. The captain tried very hard to find fish, and we stayed until 5pm before we headed home. We were only 40 miles out. The weather was snotty first thing in the morning but got better and better throughout the day. It was a tough day for most of the guys out there, only 50 fish were caught, I think another 50 were lost to inexperience and just big fish. I caught 5 and I am totally stoked.

Get out there!

Nice - glad to hear you got some big ones. 5 fish on a day like you describe is killer. I have reservations on the PQ out of Morro on the 11th and 12th - - Would it be safe to assume I should fish 30lb. line when fishing for the albies in this size class?

Mr. Tree,
Yes I would fish 30lb. I think you could get away w/ 40lb too. The fish had no problem biting once we had them at the boat.
Try 30lb fc

good luck

Will do. Hoping to hear other reports before I go too. Talked to Virge's yesterday and they said start with 30 lb. and move up to 40-50 - that's what I like to hear.

Found out the Pacific Queen is posting daily updated fish reports. Check out 10/6 report, they were even biting 100lb. test. . .
