#2705, "I got 1"

7.6# Striper at Pacifica, N. of Mussel Rock at middle hole. I know it's not a monster, but since it was only 1 of 3 that I saw surf caught all day I'm claiming bragging rights. There was about 30+ guys on the beach and I only saw mine and 2 other fish. One was caught at about 7am by a guy who was blind casting at the S. end of the rock wall right next to Mussle Rock. It was in the 15+# range. Mine was caught at about 11:45am. I was fishing the cleaner water(less froth) and saw 3 birds dive in a straight line coming towards me, with the last one just beyond the Breakers and I tried to hit it with my spoon. The lure splashed about 15' short and in 3 cranks I was hit hard. I got her on a 4oz. Mickey's jig. Even with 25# line it was still a good fight.
Other than when I got mine, the fish never pushed in towards shore and only one other small striper was caught. The regulars were all talking about the 2 major hits at Middle Hole on Wed & Thurs. That works out to be the 2 days before the New Moon.
I had a few old lessons got driven home again on this trip:
1.) Watch the birds, they indicated where the bait was getting mauled by the fish. 2.)Work troughs and the lee of points indicated by the cleaner water. 3.) Once your down to the water keep your lure in it. When I got mine 3 guys were lounging on the rocks behind me, the fish came and went before they even got a line in the water. There was one guy fishing near me and he hooked up for less than a minute.
If anyone goes I hope this helps.

Tight lines,
Wade

Hey Wade,

Way to go with the fish! I'm up to 0 for 4 now. Keep missing the runs.

When did you leave? I got to mussel rock that day around 3PM. I think I saw your car there but you must have been fishing. I took a quick drive to check out the other spots and your car was gone when I got back maybe a half an hour later.

When you arrived I was climbing...(GASP, ACHE, PAIN)...the hill with all my gear and fish. (Note to self: Next time forget the backpack with, a now measured, 21# of gear in it. Take a handfull of lures and a bottle of scent in a fanny pack and only 1 rod.) I got up to the truck at 3:20 and waited until 4 and asked a few guys if they'd seen your truck. Of course none were paying attention to what cars were around. After that I went to the Farmers Market by the Safeway and made a pig of my self on some BBQ, and finally I went home stopping to show a buddy who wants to go next weekend. Is anyone else up for it? I don't know if I'll make, it as I may be taking care of my wife after some radiation therapy.

Tight lines,
Wade
