Hey Everbody,

I will be heading down south for a wedding in Sept.(5th-8th) After reading the posts over the last year, I am very excited about getting the chance to give the salt down there a shot. Here' the catch. I am a Bass fisherman and have nothing but Bass tackle. I have several 6'6" rods matched with Curado baitcasters. Is there anyway I can use these? I am thinking about throwing swimbaits from the shore for hali's or whatever. I am really not too knowledgable on the areas fish populations, so any input would be great. I will be staying with a friend who knows the area, but does not fish too much. He did mention pokepoling though, which would be cool. I really want to stick a flattie though. I also have a couple of spinning rods that may work for perch or corbina. They are the ones I use for dropshotting and such. I know you guys down there can put me on them. Please hook me up with the info, and if you are ever heading north I would be happy to put you on some solid Delta Largemouths. Thanks in advance for you help.

Tight Lines,

Clay

Let me know what you come up with when you get back. As far as tips? I have never fished the salt in Ca. So, I am counting on these guys to offer up some for us.

Hi Clay,
I have lived in the Pismo Beach area nearly all my life, but I'm currently living and working in San Jose.
A friend and I had been surf fishing down there a couple of weeks ago. We fished about 1/2 mile south of the Oceano Ramp (just south of Pismo)and just killed the surf perch. They were hand size up to dinner plate size. We used motor oil grubs, calolina rigged with 1 oz. egg sinkers. The grubs are about 1 1/2" long. We waded into the surf about knee deep , casted out and just cranked back in. Started at low tide and worked the incoming tide.
I fished the piers at Avila also and heard of halibut being caught, but never saw or caught any myself.
My buddy was using (in the surf) a 6' spinning rig, with a Shimano 4000 size reel and 10# mono. I used an 8'6" rod with the same reel. I'm sure any of your tackle will work.

Clay,
If you turn south at the Oceano ramp (you can drive on the beach) go until you see a 15 MPH sign on the side away from the water. It has a small orange sign under it that has a #1 on it. About 100 yds. past that is where my buddy and I always fish and seem to always do good.
If you drive on the beach, stay on the hard packed sand down by the water. It gets REAL expensive to get towed out of the sand if you get stuck!
Good luck and let me know how you do,
Dave

I float-tube the salt around Monterey Bay and just up-graded to a Curado(from an ABU6500), it works great for just about all the fish that'll commonly take a Swimbait. I run 15# line and rarely have a problem.
Your spinning gear should do good for the perch of the beach. A Carolina rig with a #4-8 Octopus hook and a 1/2-1oz Egg sinker are good with live sandcrabs. When I was younger and the Family would vacation in Pismo, the hole that the other guy described just past the speed-limit sign, was a sweet spot for 10-15" Barred Surf Perch (called Bardies around here).

Tight lines,
Wade

Bad news, The beach house plan didnt work. So I will not be coming up. I'll be fishing off my boat down here(Long beach)instead.

Good luck and I hope to see a WFO report when you get back.
