You should hook up with this group which is in Long Beach (http://WWW.BAYTUBERS.COM/). Good luck. They frequently target halibut... I don't know them, nor have I fished with them, but they seem to know their stuff...

Hi Sharkbait,
Anywhere from 72nd.St.Jetty to Island Grissom is good for Halibuts. On Sat. the 29th. I caught a 28 3/4" Halibut between Cherry Beach and Island Grissom using Live Smelt.
On Sun. the 30th. I caught a 29" Halibut where we hold our weekly tournaments in Belmont Shore.
Today, Monday the 31st. I had no bites in the same location, I was surf fishing today and the last two times out I was floattubing.
There are a bunch of us that keep losing a 5 foot plus Halibut! We call her Mrs. Lucky and she will be caught one of these days.

Anthony, if you are willing to try it I should be hitting Grisolm next Fri. or Sat. night. Not much happens there in the daylight usually. But, the winter night fishing can be excellent. Last year a few of us braved super cold conditions, but caught many bass. Average night was probably 25 legal bass, with almost as many shorts. The first night I tried there I fished it first in the daylight. I had one 4# bass (taking the tourney we were having), that night I had 30+ legals. Same day, same baits. The boat traffic is not bad at night, it's an easy launch, and well worth the cold. Let me know if you'd like to try it out sometime. You should also consider a trip to down to San Diego Bay. Excellent fishing year round.

ED,
If you haven't been to Island Grissom lately, you NOW have to PAY! You buy this ticket that is worth 2 hrs. Terry Kannedy went there one night and got 3 tickets for a total of 6hrs. time. When he got out of the water 4 hours later he had a ticket that cost him $37.00. He asked the cops about it and they said there is only a (2) hour max parking there. In my book, it's not worth fishing there with all the parking problems.

Ed,
I forgot to mention that the meter parking is still on the upper hill that you can use for Island Grissom. $1.00 an hour, but I think it is closed at night?

MAN! I'm really glad I moved to northern California. I'm sorry to hear about the new parking fees. 2 hours is nothing when you're out fishin'. Ya can hardly get in the water before having to get out again. The last time I was there, there were homeless psychos all over the place. One was yelling at a palm tree and trying to beat it up! It was kinda funny. Sad, but funny. What a bummer.

Hi Anthony,
I get my bait at Mother's Beach. Very nice sized 6-8 inch Smelt there. You can use your umbrella net there but you will mostly get the smaller pinheads. Use the sabiki jigs with balled up (MILTONS) Multi Grain Bread or Squid and you will have no problems getting them. If you show up on the weekends around 6am. one of us will be there. I also have a page on my website that has the directions and how to catch them. Another productive spot is the "HOLE" which has lots of Smelt and Anchovies.
We are having a tournament this Saturday the 5th. in Belmont Shores in front of the Flip Flop Shack. Almost everyone will be getting their bait at Mother's Beach.
