#518, "July 12, SB Harbor"

I met my friend Daniel and his dad at the bait barge this evening. It was the first time I've float tubed with em since they've gotten their tubes. I've fished with Daniel many times at Carneros and on the hawk, but never from float tubes. At around sunset I started fishing for seabass. Got bit around sundown and set the hook into a 20 inch halibut. It was weird to get it on the straight wind with a 5" bait and 1 oz. head. Oh yeah, I was throwing rainbow trout color. Just before 8:30 I hooked up again to a small seabass. Within the next couple casts I hooked another seabass but it broke the line (the first seabass had wrapped all around the line and I forgot to check it for knicks. You know how that goes). I hooked up once more over the course of the night but the fish came unbottuned. Man, I was having the worst luck with getting fish to the boat. Daniel's dad got one that was just at 28, might've been legal, might've been short so he decided to just throw it back. The evening was far from bad, although it wasn't as good as last night.

I was also down at the harbor from 8:15 to 9:45. I got two WSB 25 and 27" from the shore by the bait barge. Was the first time I've hooked into wsb. Now I know what all of you are talking about. When I was fighting the fish I would have swore that it had to be legal. I was very surprised when I measured it at 25 and 27'. I was using a 5" rainbow trout fish trap with a 3/4 oz head. Thanks for all of the information from your website.

I heard you talking to somebody about how you got your fish on rainbow trout plastics, and I said to Daniel's dad, "I know for a fact that that guy heard about that from me and pete on the internet..." =D Glad we could be of service. I'll be out there tonight. Next time your out there let me know, I'm always in a green caddis float tube w/ a brown bottom. I'll be the guy with the 9' Calstar and a wsb on the stringer. I'll also be wearing a Cal hat if you ever see me out there.

Hey guys, could this be the first confirmed catch of white seabass from the shore at SB harbor??? So... it IS possible! Were you on the jetty or wading on the beach?

I was in front of the jetty wading. It was high tide so I was in water up to my chest so I could easily cast to the bait barge. i would not reccomend this as it get pretty cold once the sun goes down, but I was on a mission so I did not care. Will go from a small raft next time.
