I bought a descent quality float tube last year w/ waders, flippers, etc. right before they closed down the store where i was working at (Bob's Bait & Tackle). I'm thinking about going with a friend to fish the Balboa Bay this or next weekend. Would anyone be kind enough as to tell me the right places to fish for them spotties? Tide? Time of day? Thanks in advance for your advice.
P.S.-I think we are launching from I St.

Hey Mark,
I dont know much about Balboa, but if you want some spotties, then try casting plastics in between the boats and docks. You have to make some good casts right along the docks. If your off a little you may not have as good a time. Later.
--John

Mark,
I would recommend going to any area in the back of the harbor, the quiter the better and casting 4" swim baits (fish trap or worm king) in between boats and docks. The last two times I float tubed out there, brown was the hot color, and fish were numerous. Take the time to get in close to docks and pilings, because if you are not right against them with that bait, the fish won't bite. Also, some casts towards the open water, away from the docks produced some short seabass last time. Another good area is near davey's locker, but a little closer to the break water.
Good Luck

Jimmy nice post! How do avoid kelp and seaweed when fishing fish traps in the bay? Any other area in balboa you like?

I concur with the previous suggestions about working in tight to the docks. But definitely try the open water. Most of the spotties I've had were in open water. In talking to some guys who fish there, open water will produce well. Reason being, that's were the bait is, this is probably most true for the areas with lots of water. So, work it all and have fun. The best places seem to be the Back Bay (around Newport Dunes) and just inside the entrance to the harbor. I have been fishing the channel from the pavillion to were that channel hits the entrance, on the penninsula side. I average about 4 spotties (1-2lb range) and 4 sandies (almost allways small, not just short). I know the Dunes area produces more but it costs $7 to park. If you ever want to fish midweek send me an email and we'll hook up (sorry for that one).

Kill as little as possible,
Amish Ed
