and the fire is almost burning! me and a friend got to thinkin how to make followers bite...then i said grind up some trout and dip it into that. i have no way of doing that...no trout...then i got to thinkin, i have 9 trout from 10-15 inches in my freezer..so now they are thawing, and when they get thawed, what do you think i should do with em? do you think this would be a good idea? dont know what im gonna use to grind em, or what parts i should use. they are already gutten and the bloodline is gone, because i had intent to eat them, they came from a stream, and they are all stockers. any suggestions or tips before i start mutalating these trout?
thanks,
-patrick

Patrick,

Go ahead and do that:-)

I guarrantee that you will VOMIT after it cures for a while. I have, in the past, used ground up trout and smeared my swimbaits in it. Unless you want to make a batch for each day you go fishing, don't plan on saving it. I ground up trout in an old blender and then set it out in the sun to let the oil separate from the ground up flesh. I then took the oils and mixed it with liquified petrolium jelly along with some other goodies (Amino Acids, etc...). I didn't smell too bad the next day when I used it. The reason I used petrolium jelly is that it when it hardened, it was like HOT SAUCE and would stay on the bait really well.

Well, the second time that I used it, I tried to squirt some on my Stocker Trout and it was pugged. The plug let loose and got some on my $80 fleece jacket and the carpet in the boat. I litterally gagged the entire day (I had to put my fleece in a compartment because of the stench). After washing the jacket three times, I decided to throw it away. The carpet finally stopped stinking after about a month or so.

Just a little warning but go ahead and try it. The thought it good.

Bait butter does have ground up trout although it has a lot of other addatives.

Just accept that you are going to have followers that aren;t going to bite but let me know how you like the stench if you decid to try it :9

well, i was planning on keeping it refridgerated, and in a cooler while fishing...that may help...as for the pro cure, that crap is just way too expensive in my opinion...

Remember it's illegal to use trout in whole or part for bait in California. You probably wouldn't get caught but....

I have seen a few reports of cats being caught on trout guts?At skinner and another private lake that stocks cats and trout, are the guts illegal to use too.It seems like they would be and that the marinas shouldent report it or something, the won even encludes it in there and they should know better.Hey if your gonna use just the guts and they are illegal you might as well use a fresh lively one.j/k.
If its illegal I wonder why its ok for procure to do it?Hmmm.

Lots of California lakes are privately owned. They do not fall under the same DFG rules. It's o.k. for pro-cure to sale it because that's all they are doing, is selling it. It's up to the angler to abide by the posted laws at the particular body of water he or she is fishing at.

Did they make the using trout for bait law because it makes an unfair advantage at catching the fish or because the DFG just doesn't want everyone wasting the stockers for bait?

Edit, Duh, now I remember, can't use any game fish for bait.

i dont live in cali...i live far from it. not tryin to be a smarty or anything, just saying...we arent supposed to use it for bait either, but its not quite as strict here, yall got it rough...but yea i have no problem risking it, i mean i have used live gills for bait before. i just dont understand why, they let you keep these fish, if you take it home to eat the fish is still gonna die, so it shouldnt matter what you do with it...hey we are payin for the damn fish anyways lol...
