IFISH say's,

Hey fella's, Can anyone out there Repair fishing rods ? My problem is this, I've got a few rods with the tips missing the " Internal plastic ring " that keeps the line from touching straight metal. I've also got some with the same problem, but the metal eye piece itself is bent ( stepped on, bent out of round, etc...). I've also got a few more with bent eye's, and missing eyes ring's that are on the lower part of the rod ( near the handle, thicker part of the rod ). If anyone can repair, or knows where i can go to get them repaired. If anyone knows an estimated cost on this, that'd be awesome aswell. I've got some nice rods that are on fishing vacation because of my boneheaded-ness ! I'm WONG ! Any info is much appreciated.

IFISH

I can repair them but I`m not quite sure how you would get them to me since I live in santa rosa.If you could give me the dimensions I could make the inserts and send them to you.As far as making the eyes round again what i use are gauge pins and start off with an undersized one and slowing work my way up with larger ones till the roundness comes back. The inserts I make are out of titanium stock so they will hold up to any type of line without grooving the eyes.

Bill,
Do you have any examples of these titanium guides you're making? I'd like to see some. Are you polishing them? And how much for a set of 9 plus a tip?

I dont have any pictures but i have one on one of my flipping sticks and i hooked a friend of mine up with one on his fenwick. They are polished but they are just the inserts not the entire guide.I take a meaurement off of the inner diameter of the guide(without the insert)and make my inserts a couple of thousands larger for a nice press fit.Not only will they never wear they also prevent any smashing of the guides where as fujis and ect. would give and break. As far as a set of nine goes I`m not sure if i would replace all nine, just because that most of the line presure is going to the top eye so doing all of them would be kinda overkill and somewhat costly, probably about 5 bones per eye.Bill

Hmmm. OK I was thinking of rebuilding my saltwater rods. But I'd need the whole guide not just the ring.
The sound of titanium tips for my bass rods sounds cool though. Especially for a frog or flippin rod.

I'll have to check out what I have and go from there.
Thanks.

Chris

Hey, IFISH...
You could be wong. Are you sure your rods eyes aren't 'squinting'?

(I couldn't help myself. I just crack me up!)

Tip tops can be replaced for about $5 (cost of replacement tip top + labor), depending on the type of guide. Fuji SIC and Alconites will cost more than the standard aluminum oxide guides.

The labor rate to rewrap a guide will be around $15 plus the cost of the guide. Turn around time is about a week.

Check out The Rod Rack in Hayward or Hi's Tackle Box in SF.

IFISH,
Let me know what kind of price Benny can hook you up with. I might be able to help you out. What brand are the rods that need repair ? And how much are you willing to spend. Sounds like you want to hold on to these rods.

IFISH say's,

Well, i mean, my rods aren't Castaway's, St.Croix's, Kistler or Loomis, but i do have some nice Shimano Carbomax and Compre's, BPS IM7 Graphite, and a few other's that I've mis-treated, or have been accidently damged. None the less, i love the feel these rods have and i'd like to put them back in the game, and out of the injured reserve. I think $10 - $20 is acceptable to pay. The most guides i have messed up on any one rod is no more than 2. Some just have busted tip's, and other's have a busted tip and 1 more guide missing in the middle of the rod. Any other help and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

IFISH, I work at a Big 5 sporting goods store. We've got these "South Bend Intruder" graphite rods on sale right now for $14.99. Sounds like they'd be garbage but I assure you, they're not. They aren't some cheesy painted blank. They have a clear finish, the guides are good quality, the reel seat is graphite and they have cork handles.
I recommend them to anyone on a budget.
Most of our stores will only have a dozen or so, so you may have to hit a few stores to find a wide variety. I haven't seen a flippin' stick yet but somebody's bound to have one.
The sale is on until the 18th I think.

Chris
