Thanks for the congrats guys!... Nowhere else I'd rather get my first win...
Todd and Rob, I was thrilled when, with a couple hours left, I thought I had a chance at third behind you two!. Congrats on your strong fishishes as usual. Mario nice work on that beast bass, seeing that fish and Mikes smallmouth made my day just as much as winning.
My morning started off hot and heavy right when I got to the barrier. I caught two short fish and two that went in the box on a 4.8' flick shake in camo. I became frustrated after getting 2 of my last 4 worms in this color robbed by catching and missing more short fish, so I decided to save them for later. Put down the pansy gear, picked up the wiggle wog and second cast, bam! 2 pounder. Caught 3 with 3 other blow ups in 45 minutes. Went back to where I had missed one, flipped in a brush hog and hooked and landed a 3 pounder. Had an 11-12 pound limit for most of the day, couldnt catch an upgrade for what seemed like forever. Saw a swirl in the tulies near where I was flipping, grabbed my Hudd Shad and lightly dropped it in. What a massive hit. Hooked the fish only to have her come unplugged after 3 seconds of some major thrashing in the red grass. Awesome. Best fish of the day splashed me in the face and was gone. My morale was down.
Later in the afternoon I couldnt buy a frog or flippin bite so I decided to take a break. Got out on the barrier to adjust my pontoons after a morning of boat issues, slipped and fell on my elbow. Great. Hurt like hell. Plenty of time to fish, no motivation to go very far. Landed 3 short fish in a row on same worm only to have a 3+ shake the hook as I stretched out my net. There goes the last worm in that color. Neat. Decided to play it safe and hope to get lucky. Found the closest matching color I had in a senko to the camo flickshake and started making lazy casts to places I had already caught fish at throughout the day. Boom, 4+-lber. I was thrilled. 15 minutes later I hookep up with what I thought was a 2-3 pounder ripping through weeds on my 12lb test. Well it was in the weeds but coming out in a hurry, and uh ya it was bigger than I thought. Nate and I watched it come about 3 feet out of the water as I desperately tried to catch up, not ideal sutuation. She kicked my ass, but ended up in the net, around 6lbs. I was so excited that I culled 4-5 ounces right back into the river. That was swell. Whatever, I was stoked, rowed back to launch and got out a little early. I couldnt wipe the smile off my face if I tried, which I did.
Thanks again to all you guys who make this possible. Safe to say I'll be doing this for a long time. Love to share the company of all you great guys on the water. See you all at beacon.
Joe A.
