In my attempt to catch something before the end of year, I fished Calero, Coyote, and Del Valle this past week. With the high muddy water at these lakes, I caught a donut hole. I couldn’t even catch a planted trout at Del Valle.

The only lake that I could think of that would have clear water was San Luis, so I figured I would give it a shot today. Since I hadn’t fished San Luis in about 2 years, I relied on one of my friend’s info and my dad and I trolled Portuguese Cove with rebels and swim baits. After my dad and I each miss a fish, I finally get a hookup. The initial bite was softer than a planted trout, but after the hook set, it felt like I hooked a boat that was going in the other direction. After a few solid 50’ foot runs, my dad nets the fish (11.6 lbs). After hour of nothing, I get a second hookup. This time the fish seemed smaller……until she decided to swim away from the boat! About 10 minutes later the net drops in for my second fish (14 lbs). My dad got 2 more bumps before 11:30, but that was it for the day.

It didn’t rain at all, but the wind really picked up about mid morning, and the white caps got us pretty wet on the ride back in at noon. I could not believe that there were 2 small “car topper like” aluminum boats out there with 10 hp motors. A float tube would probably be safer - it won’t sink. Fishing is a lot of fun, but lets be safe and make sure we get home !!
