Got to start the new year off by fishing. I woke up late, I had set my alarm for 3:30 p.m., not a.m, but I rushed down to Irvine in only 45 minutes and met up with John. By the way, thanks Darin for stopping by early, I will sure put that rod to good use very soon!!!
John and I rented a boat and went right out to the springs area. We got a few bites and a few fish out of the area, but we then moved down to the flats area. We got a few more fish in this area, but the wind was so bad, it made us drift over the area's even though our anchors were down. Around 11, John and I went in for some lunch and then went back out.
We went back to the same area in the flats and got a few more fish, but the actions started off slow. Before the day ended we went back to the flats area, and I was about to reel my two rods in, I got a fish on both to end the day.
This was my first time fishing Irvine, and I was pleasantly surprised. With all the talk about how hard Laguna Niguel's fish fight, the ones we caught today at Irvine fought three times as hard. Another thing as well, was the fish at Irvine were all full finned. LNL is a nice lake, but these fish were just better fighters. Many of the trout we caught jumped, and went on some drag peeling runs. John even had a nice two pound trout jump out of the water at least two feet and spit the hook. I can't wait to fish this Sunday at Irvine for the friendly tournament! Hope to see y'all out there!
All in all I had a great time today. I caught 18 rainbows, and John and 16. John though had 2 rainbows, that weighed about 4 pounds each. One was full of eggs, while the other one just had a lot of meat. Tight Lines, Jason Huckeba
