#108, "November 11, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

Had the day off from school today (Veteran's Day) so Matt Peters and I headed up to Margarita around 1 in the afternoon. Weather was nice, clear skies and mild temperatures. We started out spooning the docks just to see if anything was happening and wound up with a couple bluegill, 2 small bass, and a crappie on hopkins and kastmasters. After about 20 minutes we headed for the area where we did well last weekend. It took us a while to find 'em but when we did it was on! Matt was throwing a Norman Deep Little N in rainbow trout and I was throwing a 5" Cardiff Plastics swimbait on one of their 3/4 gamagatzku jigheads. We fished the area for about an hour and Matt had 2 while I had 7 fish with a couple in the three pound range. They were just clobbering the swimbait, I had one hit it hard, I swung and missed it, and as soon as I picked up the slack, wham three pounder. I'm gonna be a jerk and not tell where we were fishing but the spot was a big flat with sparse weeds on it and there were numbers of fish on it. After that we moved to Salsipuedes Bay to fish on the point at the mouth of it. Saw some guys spooning fish mid-lake but we didn't really feel like spooning so we went over to Jackass canyon just to check it out. Well that area was dead, no action, so around 4:30 we headed back to the swimming pool cove. I picked up a 14"er on the swimbait on the island in the back but it was kinda dead too. With the sun going down we cruised back to the marina cove. Matt hooked one on the crankbait but it shook off. Then I picked off another swimbait fish, Matt lost another one and then connected with one as it was getting dark, a 2 pounder. Pretty darn good bite today on the swim bait once again. What can I say about this lure? It just plain catches fish!
