#16921, "Bikes, backpacks, and bait."

Took the kids to one of my hiking creeks, we bought some shiners and some crawlers and we hopped on our bikes and disappeared.

The water is really clear on this stream and I was teaching the kids to keep the bait away from the little fish and to try to let the bigger ones get it. They both did a good job of catching today, but as fishing goes we lost some to the bushes and broken lines. Here’s the first fish of the day.

The fish were willing biters. The tricky part was keeping the tiny ones off the bait. My other daughter gets hers.

More bass to be had.

I love sight fishing.

As we snuck up to one pool, we spotted this huge largemouth bass. This was very surprising to me, I thought I knew every fish on this creek. I pointed it out to my oldest daughter and when she saw it she told me to try and catch it,…well, you don’t have to ask me twice.

You could see she’s a beautiful girl, she’s a beautiful girl. Suddenly I see, why the hell she means so much to me. This dang ol’ dagum bass was pushing 5lbs. Which is amazing considering the creek she came out of. The freakin battle of the century trying to get her out of the logs and bushes with my ultralight. I thought for sure I was gonna break my little telescoping Master rod, but it hung in there well, along with the 6lb Maxi.

After using up all the shiners we switched to worms. This bass was our only worm bass.

After the bass fun, we focused our efforts on panfish. Bluegill were dime a dozen in some areas.

Again we tried to keep the bait away from the little ones to get the big ones.

Of course it doesn’t always work, but it makes it more interesting. You may recognize this fish from some of my older post.

He is a green sunfish and bluegill mutt. He is the king of this particular section of creek. The fishgods were kind on this day and actually let us catch him twice.
