#27, "June 21, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

Matt and I drove up over the cuesta grade to the lake today for yet another Santa Margarita evening session.
Our plan was to fish worms over the main lake body in deep water. We tried this for about an hour but
couldn't make it happen. Moving over to jackass canyon I was tossing the AC minnow and Matt was fishing a
6" worm on a brass n glass when we hooked up a double with both fish 2-2.5 pounds. By then it was getting
dark so we decided to do some topwater in Salsipuedes bay. We pulled up to the site of bass boiling on the
edges of the weed beds. A few minutes later I had a solid kerwhomph on the moss master frog. YES!!! and I
farmed it........ Next little cove I farmed the same bass three times in a row on the frog before casting off the
other side of the boat and nailing one around 2 and a half pounds. Matt had a nice blow up a bit later but
despite letting the frog get clear under water the fish managed to cough it up. Things slowed down the
further back in the bay we got until it was time to jet. My feeling is that the fish are starting to settle in to
summertime and are getting out of the post-spawn somewhat. Look for the thickest weeds you can find.
Not the thin stringy stuff but the leafy plants that grow up out of the water, and then huck the moss master
in and try not to farm 'em too much!
