#306, "Cachuma"

Since it was the last day my dad and I had a Friday off together (for a while) he asked if I wanted to go to Cachuma in the morning. We fish from his ski boat so it's not really the ideal bass fishing rig but it beats the shore. No trolling motor makes it tough. We started off fishing around Jack Rabbit Flats for both bass and trout. I was bass fishing and he was primarily trout fishing. Got one little sunfish. Later we went across the lake and saw a few bass in shallow water near tules but couldn't get them to take anything. My dad got a trout on a roostertail. Frustrated with no too much time left I decided to just kick back and troll some Rat-L-Traps and picked up a nice smallmouth (about 16 inches). Then we trolled past this deep cove that had some nice looking cover near shore including a small patch of tules. I told my dad to cruise in there and let me check out the tules. The water is really clear and if the sun is hitting it right you can see down like 30 feet. Anyway I threw the Rat-L-Trap at the tules a couple times and on the second cast while watching the lure come in just under the surface I saw this nice bass come shooting out of the deep water and slam into my lure. She didn't even slow down as line started ripping off my reel. The fish turned out to be 19 inches and had a nice belly on it (I forgot to weigh it). It was one of the coolest strikes I've ever seen.
