#324, "Santa Margarita"

A lot of hittin'-n-missin'!!! Fished Santa Margarita Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Off of various points, caught a few small bass, along with a whole lot of chasers, on Stanley Jigs (3/8 oz, black and blue skirt with a matching Zoom plastic trailer). Also had some action with a Storm Chug Bug, but lost two nice bass which wrapped the line in the sticks. For the first time, I tried using that 7" MS Slammer (the one that Rob catches all those big bass with). That is one big lure! I managed to catch only one 2 pounder with it...little bass are crazy like that...but man, oh man, there were some huge bass that chased it! One time, a trout was skittering along the surface. Then it darted towards shore right at me. Chasing it was a huge, monster bass! The trout escaped the jaws of death by turning back into deep water so fast that the bass just stopped. The bass saw me, since I was only like four feet away from all this, so it spooked and started floating away. I thought I might as well try getting it's attention again with the MS Slammer, and on the third cast, there she was again! It slowly followed and did a couple half-lunges at it before she saw me again spooked for good. What a bummer! Any suggestions on how to get these big bass to take it and not just chase it? What's up with all this chasing right now?
