#347, "July 15 - Lopez Lake"

For the first time in awhile, the boat ran 100%! After replacing the power tilt motor, everything ran the way it was supposed to, so now it's time to tweak things again, right? Anyhow, on to fishing.

My buddy Pete and I made a quick run to Lopez on Saturday morning to see what's going on in the water. We arrived at the ramp around 6:30am and were surprised at the number of bass boats already in the water. I guess the record bass has brought everyone in by the numbers as every other parking space at the marina ramp was filled with trucks & trailers; all with water dripping (versus letting them sit overnight and have the boat moored). It was extremely foggy. Visibility was around 50 feet and only allowed me to idle to the Lopez Arm.

We began fishing at Stawberry Flats and used cranks, spinners, and worms. We got hit a couple of times north of the pier using cranks but didn't react in time. We continued further into the arm and took a right into a little cove past the No Wake Zone. It was in there I caught a 3/4 pound smallmouth on the south wall, about midway in, using a Rapala Rattle Trap, brown top, white midsection & red belly.

As we exited the cove, we trolled across the mouth and found interesting structure underneath (right in line from the pile of concrete bricks) which I was unable to interpret (I'm using a Lowrance X-75). It wasn't a school of bait (we saw them just outside of this 'structure'), but it almost looked like a bunch of bushy trees down there. We didn't have a chance to go back and look again, but it may hold something. We continued further into the Lopez arm trying both sides, but were unable to interest anyone else. We ended up heading back around 10am.

One last note: the green alge was no where to be found. The water was almost brownish in color, but perhaps it was because the sun hadn't hit the water yet. Either way, it made a great day for playing on the lake!
