#7048, "late report, SLO bay 6/15"

I finally got to get out. I don't fish much anymore since my babies were born. My fathers day gift was to go out and fish all morning without feeling guilty. I launched in my kayak at about 7:00 a.m. near the boat launch and headed under the pier toward the break water. On the way I threw my fishtrap (4" grunion w/1/2 oz. jig) around some kelp about thirty feet from the beach and got bit on about the third cast. It was a 15" bocaccio. Continued down the beach targetting kelp edges for nothing until I reached that rock island. Lots of kelp around the island but didn't get bit until I reached the outside point. It was a 20" ling. Saw some boats fishing along the breakwater and headed that way. Near the large rock at the base of the breakwater there are a lot of submerged rocks with sand in between. I was in about 8 to 10 feet of water and started targetting the sand edges. I got bit pretty quick but missed. A couple of cast later landed a 19" butt. I decided to through a few long casts and ran the fishtrap slow and steady above the rocks and got bit pretty quick. It felt like a good fish and it was, a 25" ling. Tried the same thing a while longer but kept coming in loaded with weeds so went back to targeting the sand. Had a somewhat slow but consistent bite on the butts and landed nine fish, the last two were on the 4" sardine fishtrap. All were 19" to 21.5". I never made it too far down the breakwater and it was passed time to head back. It sure was nice to get out again and the kayak was great. Not much room for gear though but it keeps it simple. By the way, both lings were coved with parasites? The 20" had what looked like a couple of roundworms in its mouth.
