Hey Gang, I launched out of Channel Islands harbor Saturday with my buddies Matt Russell (Fish Rustler) and Skip Amy (Reduced Pressure) Anyhow I decided to run down and fish the Deep Hole area to start, real nice running down hill, averaged 25 knots on the way down. As I pull up to the Hole the water is 59 and kinda coffee colored, but I thought we would try it anyways. The sandies bit fair till the sun came out as did the mini lings and other misc rockfishies, but no calico? After working the Deep Hole area over real good we start working our way down towards the BKR with not much happening, although as we worked our way down the coast the water got warmer and a little cleaner. Soon as we reach Point Dume we could see the fleet anchored up on the BKR, so I hit one of my little sneaky spots off the point that usually kicks out a nice flurry of calicos for one drift, and the spot did not dissapoint, we picked of 6-8 nice 2-31/2lb calicos on the first drift and only 1 on the second, that’s just the way that spot is for some reason, but that first drift they always go nuts, from there we joined the fleet hitting various spots around the BKR for the occasional calico, sandie, sculpin, but no real good bite, water temp there was 65.5! . So as were running back towards the point I spot an area skinny water I’ve never tried before, and it looked just right, so I thought would give a few casts, and it turned out to be one of our better spots of the day! We picked 10 calicos off that spot in short order, while getting funny looks from the surfers as we live boated right outside of their break! From there we worked the spots back up the Deep Hole for only a couple more bass. Finals: 35 legal mixed bass to just under 4lbs with a 60/40 calico/sandie mix, and bunch of misc lings/rockfish, most of the fish were caught on 5in Big Hammers in the calico hunter or silver sardine colors, although we did get a couple fish on 4 and 6in Hammers. Great day on the water, good friends, and tons of good ribbing!….Captain Larry…..
Real fish are measured in pounds - not inches!
