i went to the SB Harbor this morning to see this red tide for myself and yes, it was quite thick!
as i was already there and had my pole with me i decided to give it a try anyway and proceeded to have the best day in a long time!
i started at 7:45 and fished two hours throwing a 3 inch Wookie Wacker on a silver 1/2 oz darter head.
ended up with 13 sand bass (probably 10 were legal) and 1 short halibut. the sand bass were extremely aggresive. i had a fish on my first cast and at one point had fish on 3 successive casts.
in some rare cases i think the red tide can be beneficial. the sand bass seem to stay in the harbor no matter what condition the water is in and they have to eat sometime. the cloudiness of the water during a red tide must make it harder on the bass to feed and thus when they do see something that looks appetizing, they don't mess around.
