I took a couple of vacation day off from work this week to do what I like best. Fish! I decided to give the short halibut and the nice spotty bay bass a break at Oceanside Harbor and try my luck in the surf. Arrived at the beach just south of Wisconcin St. around 8:00 A.M. hoping to fish about 3 hours of the incoming and about 1 of the outgoing.
Looked north and south as far as I could see and not a sign of any sand crabs. Swell! So, I carolina rigged some grubs for Perch and was humbled for about an hour. About this time I was ready to pack it in and and concentrate on some projects at home when I remembered that years ago I used to always find crabs underneath the Oceanside Pier.
Jumped in my car for the 5 minute drive and sure enough! Not great crabs kinda smallish but I knew they would do. After about ten minutes with the unrecruited help of about 4 boys and girls, I had my bait. When back to my original spot and began casting.
I had never used my Shimano Charrus 7'6" Rod/Shimano Sahara 4000 Spinner/ and 6# test in the surf before. I made up a slider halibut rig using 6# test florocarbon as the leader with a bronze #6 baitholder hook with a 1 oz pyrimid sinker seperated by 2 beads and 2 #7 brass swivels.
Wow! 4th of July belated! Nailed 7 Corbs in a span of 2 hours all on the out going tide! Largest was 20" shortest was 13". I'm sold on the light gear in the surf. Absolute kick in the a35e with all the long runs.
I strung up 4 to 5 crabs on the hook and believe it or not none of them from what I could tell were soft shells.
Back to work thursday but ready for the weekend! :7
