#10722, "Labor Day, Newport Report"

Launched around 6am from the USCG beach with my 2 1/2 yr old son. This was his second trip with me and went much better than the first time. The first time we only got two very small sand bass, and needless to say he was bored.

This time I took him to better area, took snacks, and caught a couple nicer fish. We started off with a small sandie (he wanted nothing to do with this one). We worked a lot of water, and then went into a very small beach for some breakfast, rock and shell throwing, tripping on rocks, and anenome (sp?) poking.

Launched after all that fun and started working a blade at the docks. Dumped a decent spottie when Mateo wouldn't take the handoff (guess it was too small). Switched to my old Newport favorite (C-rigged, oxblood light Roboworm 4" paddle tail zipper) on my freshwater Iovino Doodlin' rod. First cast and we got bit. Let it take it a little and then set the hook. Instant dragg burn. This one, he wanted to wind in. After a long battle we had ourselves a legal butt, after more short battles I got the hook out and he swam away. But, he bent the hook. So, back to the blade (1/2oz., white with twin chrome willows, clear w/ red flake 3.5" grub trailer). First cast and we get slammed. Set the hook and immediately get a good run. This one too, he wound in. Nice spottie, 3-3.5lbs. Best spottie my yak has seen from the blade (guess the practice is paying off).

Next fish was a while later and it was only small sandie so I got to wind that one in myself. I guess Mateo will grow up too be a yakfishing, T-shark chasing man, and/or a long range, big tuna chaser. Either way it's good to see he's descriminating between the good fish and the small ones. We ended up back on shore around 9am where he got to play with another yakfisherman's sons and the chovies in his bait tank.

Water seemed to be around 63ยบ and pretty clear. Tidal movement was good in some areas (like where we got the 2 good fish), but overall it was sluggish. Slightly overcast and not too hot.

Obviously a great day,
Amish Ed
