#10861, "Tuna Tails and Toads report 9/20"

Sorry for delay in posting gang but I was dead after the trip and busy today. This was our church's charter aboard the Fury out of Dana Wharf. After Skipper Rick gave us our options, the vote was for tuna and yellows over SCI. Fishing had been spotty but we thought we'd have a shot at some pelagics. We woke up in the predawn dark which gave way to partly cloudy skies and super calm conditions--little swell and little wind. Being Mr. Green, I was stoked on the conditions. We got going quickly to find a paddy before anyone else did as we saw many boat lights around us. The first paddy gave up a YFT for Henry Ortega (his first) on a sardine. We landed one more off of it before there was no action. A few others were lost to equipment or line failure. Troll stops were frequent and were mostly skippies. Those stops yielded 1-4 fish each on bait or a jig on the slide. Megabaits and Big Hammers seemed to be the slide lures of choice. A YFT jigstrike turned into 3 for 4 YFTs on bait. Ron Steuber got his first YFT ever by grinding the iron. It also won him JP, his first ever. Most folks got at least one fish but some including yours truly only got the heads of a few 'dines crushed. Many bites were subtle as if the fish didn't really want to eat but just kill the bait instead. Water was 70 everywhere we went. We fished about 50 miles west of SD and 60 miles SW of Dana. Final count was 7 YFT to 25#, 25 or so skipjack 10-15#. A great group fishing and a good job by the crew.
