#11198, "Newprt and Shelter Island, Thanksgiving Reports"

11-28-03
Newport, launched @USCG beach

Launch and Return: 5:00-11:00am

Totals: 1 legal (spottie), 1 (sandie)

Plastics: tried just about everything, presented just about every way; very few bites, a couple dumped on the retrieve

Spinnerbaits: tried almost everything I have; 3/8oz Red Eye spinnerbait w/ green pearl reeper trailer got the spottie

Crankbaits: tried Mort's, deep diving, firetiger; got the sandie on that, plus dumped one

Scent: Smelly Jelly Pro, Salty Crawfish, used irregularly

Conditions: Tide dropping till around 8, about an hour lull, then pushing. Current was off and on all morning. Had to look for areas where current was moving the whole morning. Water about 61º and clear, clear, and clear, but with lots of debris once push started. Air about 50º at launch, around 75º by landing.

Special Comments: Even the kitchen couldn't seem to knock a few unconcious.

Areas fished: launch area out to bait barge, then back in and around penninsula towards Pavilion (almost to WSB pens), then across to island, and back to H.P. dock around to landing area.

S.D. Bay, Shelter Island

Launch and Return: 6:30am-12:00pm

Totals: 7 legals (5 spotties, 2 sandies), 5 shorts (mostly sandies), 1 micro lizard fish, and 1 short 'but

Plastics: dropshotted reepers, jerk baits, zipper worms, and grubs; all 3-4"
Colors: tried lots of new colors, but brown and orange worked best (should have stuck to it. Plus my prototype zippershad took one of the legal sandies

Spinnerbaits: 3/8oz. white/chart. w/ small nickel C-blade and large W-blade produced a couple legal spotties.

Crankbaits: tried a Matsuo deep diver in a shad pattern. couple short biters lost.

Scent: Smelly Jelly Pro, Salty? Crawfish

Conditions: Water, about 60º and slightly offcolor. Air at launch about 55º, warmed up considerably as day progressed. Wind was slight most of morning. Normal 9am blow didn't hit until maybe 11, and even then it wasn't too bad. Current was slow on pull, decent on push.

Special Comments: Rob joined me from launch until maybe 8:30. I think he jinxed me when he left though, "You'll probably wack 'em after I leave, just like last week." Not! It was a pleasure to fish with him though.

Areas fished: deeper water down to west end of Shelter and back to launch area. shallower water from launch area down to Bahia Shoal. Navy Point across from Bahia. Then worked outside back to launch area. Finished off in the boats around launch area.
