I have been testing out the new Avet MXL for the past month. I've only used live Dinos and iron with it. So far, time has only permitted me to use this reel from local 1/2-3/4 day trips. I've spooled the reel with 300 yards of pink 20#Ande. I am a die hard Shimano fan. This is the first American made saltwater I have ever bought.
The lever drag takes a little getting used to, but once you get it dailed in you're lovin it. The freespool on this reel is incredible, not to mention the smooth machined one-piece aluminum frame.
The reel is currently seeing time on a new Shimano Teramar jig stick (8ft). The reel is great for tossing live bait, but how about artificials? At only 4.5:1 gear ratio , I'm wondering if it's too slow to get proper action from trowing iron?
I'm thinking of just using it as a live bait reel, where retrieve speed isn't important. Any thoughts appreciated.
