#14411, "Bok Bok Bok Bok Bokaaak!!"

Sorry for the late report, but got worked at worked after my first ever ablie trip on Sunday.

Up at 12:45, yeah that’s right, 12:45 for the start of what would end up being a 25.5 hour day. Off from SB to Pasadena to pick up my boat scrubber / professional tuna slayer / deck hand Steve in Pasadena. Left Pasadena about 3:30 and off to Shelter Island. Launched about 6:00 and off to the bait dock for a scoop of deans. Not having ever gone for Tuna, decided to just join the party at the 182. Found 2 dry patties just shy, which I’m sure had been pounded multiple times, for nada.

Troll lines in at about 7:45 or so. At about 9:45, kablaaaam!!!!! Jig strike!, I’m on the rod quick and instantly a second rod goes off. Sweet double on my first tunies ever. Steve’s on the second stick, so I know I’m on my own for da gaffin. I get mine up to the boat and I’m just about to reach for the gaff and the hook pulled. Watchin that big boy swim away after waiting for so long to go get one was tough, but at least Steve was still on his and I made the gaff for him to put our fist chicken on the boat. Nice and bloody!!

About an hour later I got my chance again with a single jig strike, a blistering run and a successful conclusion. My first ever.

A bit later another jig strike. This time as it gets close to the boat, it decides it’s not quite done a starts a drag screaming run which ends up with a very unexpected break off! WTF? On 60 pound. Must have been a nick in the line. Sucks because I lost our best jig.

Kept picking away every hour or two with single jig stops and no bait fish. Here’s number 2 for me.

And later followed up by number 2 for Steve.

Called it at about 4:00 with 4 in the box and 2 dumped at the boat. A great day for me, but sounded like a few less then most.

Not rocket science, just the standard black and purple, Mean Joe Green, abortion colored jigs at about 7mph. Radio was a mess all day, hard to get out to our 2 buddy boaters, especially with some jackass callin out my boat name non stop for a couple of hours.

Had some sweet sashimi, tuna rolls and bacon wrapped BBQ’d albie steaks last night.

Thanks to everyone for the info and especially to Steve for the expert guiding, boat washing and fish cleaning.

Gonna hit it again on Friday if it all holds together.
