#252, "SB Harbor"

Well, my friend Brian recently got a float tube, so we decided to meet Pete and his friend down at the harbor and see if we couldn't catch us some halibut and white seabass. Brian and I have been float tubing Lake Los Carneros 5 or 6 days a week together and we'll occasionally meet Pete down there. Pete had said that they were getting into a pretty good halibut bite and also had some white seabass come in at the harbor, so instead of the lake we decided to try the harbor. It was Brian's first time in the ocean, and I think he'll be back for more. We launched behind the bait barge and trolled over to the base of the pier where we spotted the other guys. We were both fishing plastics (5" big hammers). Over by the base of the pier, Pete reported catching 3 short halibut and one lizard fish. I managed to pull a Daniel and side hooked a ronkie right off the bat. Brian and I were both getting hit just about every cast but could not connect with anything. We came to the conclusion that they were small fish and couldn't get their mouths around the hook. Probably little ronkies and perch and maybe short halibut pecking at them. Not once did I have a fish hit it above the hook. They kept picking at the tail. Brian had a short flattie follow up to the surface, and after and hour or two of total frustration of missing fish after fish, we moved over to the bait barge. By this time the sun was starting to go down so we were hoping for some white seabass action pretty soon. Before we hit up the bait barge I saw the other guys throwing plastics in real shallow water and that reminded me of that jointed rebel lure that this guy uses in Catalina to catch halibut (he throws it up onto the beach and drags it back, deadly on halibut). So, I decided to give that a shot. I had a few in my box, so I tied one on. No luck up shallow, so I started working the bait barge with it. Actually it was a separate float containing bait farther away from the actually barge. First or second cast- TAG. MISS. DAMN. Second cast- TAG. SET. HOOK UP. HELL YEAH. Ok, I was holding my rod tip down, almost in the water (and Brian can back me up on this) and this WSB repeatedly jumps out of the water as soon as he's hooked. It was better than a smallmouth. It was so great. After that he remembers he's supposed to swim, not fly, and he digs in. After a fairly quick battle on like 20#, I get a short WSB to the boat. I think he went like 20 or 22 inches or something. After that fish, I got tagged again while trolling it around the bait barge, but it was a real quick tap and the fish didn't stick. Hopefully next time I can put Brian on some fish. We were considering putting trailer hooks in the tails of our swimbaits. We definitely would've stuck more fish. Alright, the fishing has been pretty good in the salty water lately, I highly recommend getting out there. I'll post the next time we go out.
