#393, "S.B. Harbor - June 24 & 25"

June 24th - went down to the harbor in the morning. Fished the bait receiver with the fastrac and plastics. Got 7 white seabass. Three of them were 27 inches, 2 were in the 25 inch range, and two were in the 20-22 inch range. Damn these things fight! About half were caught on the fastrac and half on the plastic. Seabass are so weird. The bite only lasted about an hour. It was totally dead before and after.

June 25th - went back. Got 6 white seabass. On the average they were smaller than yesterday except for one. My first legal in the float tube at 29 inches - actually it was 28 31/32 :) couldn't have been any closer to 29. The way it fought I thought I had a monster. I couldn't believe how small it was when I saw it (not that 29 inches is small but I had visions of a 20 or 25 pounder in my head).

Didn't even try for halibut either day although I saw some guy get a short fishing from the rocks.

One more thing. Seabass are by far not as tough as halibut (kind of like trout compared to a bass in freshwater). Please treat the shorts as gently as possible. I've seen idiots slam them against decks and/or rocks. Actually, you should treat all fish you intend to release as gently as possible.

You can't catch tomorrow what you kill today - please practice catch and release.
