#4638, "Nice Yellows!!! 1/27"

We fished Sunday NW of North Island at about 200' from daybreak until about 2pm. There was a variety of fish to be had and lots of signs of life including endless meter marks. Our best bite came around 9:30am when we hooked up on four different nice Yellows. I was using 40# P-line, landing three and my buddy snapped his off after a long battle using 30# P-line, all a solid 25lbs. This good bite lasted only about a half an hour and then they refused to play. We caught all of the Yellows on a glow in the dark, white 6x Salas iron doing the yoyo. The only other boat to catch Yellows out there today was the Bonnie Bell and they got one about 10am. We were so close to each other that we could even carry on a conversation while we were catching. The drift was so nonexsistant that there was not a lot of boat jockeying with most boats staying in their own positions. The rest of the day we caught a lot of bigger Rockfish keeping only 10. Greenlings, Reds, Sheephead, and Sculpin to around out an incredible winter day out on the water in our own backyard... We heard one guy on the radio claiming, who will remain nameless, that he caught a few Yellows on Saturday from 8am-10am, and not Sunday. We never saw him hook up on anything Sunday and could only hear him griping during our catching sessions. It just seems really fishy to me when someone can fish two separate days in a row and not know the difference between the two days??? The fish bit better on Saturday than Sunday due to the cooler water temperatures yesterday. The Pacific Voyager was out Saturday scoring 12 Yellows for 9 anglers and no Yellows for their Sunday full day run... The water temperature is back down to 58.0 degrees from about 60.5 degrees on last Friday. Wait for the next warmer current to pass North Island and the Yellows will go off! These fish are always here, it's just a matter of feeding habits and water temperature. When the water temperature changes so do their feeding habits...
