#7834, "9-23-02 stearns warf"

DAY: 9-23-02 and 9-24-02

TIME: 4:30-6:00

PLACE: Base of Stearns Warf

CONDITIONS: 1-2 foot waves Clean water

BAIT: olive/white Clouser

FISH COUNT: two Halibut, one 10 inch one 20 inch

COMENTS: finally got over my cold and started fishing again.
On Monday when I got to the beach. There was already two other Fly fishermen working the west side of the pier, I said hi talked for a minute and then went on over to the east side. First cast a 10 inch halibut. I’m thinking, Oh Yeah!! Well it wasn’t going to happen, another guy Stephen showed up and schooled me on how to catch fish, two hours of watching him catch while I just flogged the water.
Nice guy showed me what he was using a tan and white Clouser, he was using a Clear intermediate line and I was using a sinking head with a shorter leader.
Tuesday, I went back with my 5wt and a floating line eight feet Floro leader, and clouser I tied up the night before, white buck tail but for the top I used the dirty brown part of the tail.
First cast 20” Halibut. I thought I figured it out, but not yet, just another evening of working it for a couple of short strikes… I’m just not getting the number of fish I used to catch throwing plastics
Oh Well beautiful evening….

PS spent Saturday morning on the Warf, Boaters World Kids Fishing Derby, metlots of nice people. saw Marco, He showed me some pictures of his Tuna trip on the Searcher, looked epic.
My son Max got third place in his age group (6 and under). He won a Zebco combo. The cool thing is, when we signed up he saw the prizes, then while we were fishing he let me know he didn’t want to win one of those “Baby rods”, so when he won the Zebco. I was ready for some “issues”. But he was cool, looked at he package and said “ I guess I can use the tackle box and give the rod to Lucas” ( Lucas is a friend of Max’s he’s only 3)

Oh Yeah Max’s fish was a 12 Jack Smelt
