#8634, "Surf Fishing Manhattan Beach"

I got a group of about 15 together for a morning out surf fishing Manhattan Beach. We started out at 6am just north of the pier. The majority of the folks had never fished the grub before and none of the kids had even fished the surf. It was going to be an interesting day. Well...we got out on the sand by about 6:15 or so after suiting up in waders and such and setting up tackle. That is...for those who didn't have the chairs, rod holders, and ice chests and stuff to carry! hahahahah! Well the first guy out had a fish in the first couple of casts. It was great. Immediately we started catching fish. Within the first 30 minutes or so nearly everyone had at least one fish...all on the grub! We were fishing both the motor oil color as well as smoke glitter. The guys fishing the clear/red glitter didn't even get sniffed! (One quick side note...I know I've talked about this alot...but it really took for the grubs to be slathered in Hot Sauce before you could really get bit.) So everyone, event the kids had fish on or released. Everyone was getting bit. The fish weren't big. They were probably averaging 1/2 a pound or so?

Unfortunately, since we had such a big group, we weren't quite as mobile as I usually am. We just stayed in the one spot for about 3 hours and fished as the perch kept cruising through. After the initial bite, things slowed down. By 9:30am the bite was basically done. Too many body boarders for it to be safe. It was time to eat so we packed up our stuff and headed up to the "Kettle" for some grubbin of our own! That bite was wide open! hahahahahaha! Well...it was a great winter perch fishing day! Nothing big but there were a lot of them. For 15 of us, we probably ended the day around 40 fish or so up to maybe 3/4 to a pound? If you are heading out there...go early and take a lot of grubs!

Good luck and remember to take a kid fishing.

Darin
