#1076, "Almaden Lake report 3/31"

Well, knowing theres some real toads at Almaden Lake, I thought I'd go and check the back creek looking for beds in the tules. Saw fish everywhere but not all were that easy to get to. Started off on the light rail side and found one little cove with a lot of activity. Couldn't find any bed fish, but I did sight one MONSTER bass cruising. If I had to guess, I'd say she went between 14 and 15 lbs, maybe more. Didn't see where she went, just saw her cruising by herself then off into some tules. Wish I saw her locked on a bed. Fished a jig around the cove for a while and kept looking at the Almaden side...it looked real good. Off to my van, crossed the bridge and parked in the water works. Walked around the little pond over to the creek again and the first cove I came to I saw a fish on a bed. Looked 3 maybe 4 lbs. Started harrassing the bass with a 1/2 oz brown jig with a purple yamamoto twin tail jig. This fish was LOCKED on big time. Kept circling the jig. I smacked the fish a few times with the jig, but couldnt get it to go. Messed with this fish for damn near an hour and some guy came by and said there was some other fish on beds further up. Went up there for a while and threw the jig some more but couldnt find the fish he was talking about, so I went back to the other fish. Messed with it for another 10 minutes and decided it wasn't gonna hit the jig, so I tied on the storm bluegill swimbait. Instantly I got a much better reaction. The fish nipped at 2 times then I just wobbled it over the bed and BLAM!!! fish on. Got the fish in quickly and couldnt believe how much bigger the fish was in person (haha........in person). This fish went about 4.5 to 5.5 lbs. (didnt have a scale on me, but thats a rough estimate). All that time paid off and made my day. After that, I moved closer to the lake and started making long casts with the bluegill and got hit and missed the fish. Then about 10 minutes later I got hit again, reeled it in and the tail was gone. Fun day!!!!!!
