Urban I think the subtle bite comes from the fish coming towards you when sucks up the bait from behind. The fish is probably traveling just a little faster than the bait so you only feel a slight tick. I have had many of those. I have also had a couple of bites that just kept ripping line out of my reel before I engaged it. It always takes me a second to realize I'm bit.
