#15090, "Clear Lake, May 24th & 25th"

Day 1

A friend & I launched at the State Park around 5:30 AM on Saturday. We immediately went to Greenhaven (where my friend had caught a 9lber. earlier in the year) to look for some bed fish. At about 7:30 the wind picked up, BIG TIME. I looked out at the Narrows and saw 4 ft. whitecaps!! We were getting pushed all over the place. Between the algae bloom and the wind, sight fishing was out of the question. We were throwing topwater, crankbaits and flipping brush hogs underneath the docks, and along the wall. After catching 5 - 6 small fish at Greenhaven, we headed for the shelter of Konocti Harbor at 9:45 AM. We fished the protected sides of Dollar & Anderson Island and then fished the docks up to the resort. We caught 5 small fish dropshotting 4 inch worms, grubs, & flukes underneath the docks.

After lunch at the resort, we braved the elements and ran back to the north end of the lake. It was GNARLY!!!!!!!!!!! The winds were probably 50 MPH. The only water I can compare it to is Tahoe on a bad day (or the OCEAN!). I've never been out in a bass boat in those conditions. It was difficult. In a larger boat with a deeper hull it wouldn't have been as tough.

After making it through the Narrows we fished the tules north of the State Park for a few hours and got skunked. We did see some nice fish back in the tules but unable to coax them into a bite.

Day 2

Launched at 5:00 and headed to Henderson Pt. We fished the entire shoreline down through Soda Bay. The air temperature had dropped considerably and the wind wasn't a problem. The fish had moved out of the shallows onto the outer weed edges. We caught 10 fish, a few keepers and the biggest going 3lbs. We threw crankbaits, Senkos, and again I caught all my fish dropshotting, this time in 12 - 17 ft. of water.

A few other points of interest. Memorial Day Weekend is a great time to fish the lake. There were VERY few bass boats out there. We were able to cover plenty of water without many distractions. The conditions did have something to do with the lack of fisherman, but even on Sunday we didn't see THAT many boats.

All in all it was a fun trip. My conclusion: Success on that lake takes time and effort!
