#18527, "Berryessa ABA team report, Russ- Rich"

The weather was great at Berryessa. A little overcast and a very slight drizzle wizel here and there. We had 69 boats and Russ and I where #37. We went a little south and fished some mounds that Russ knew about and Russ was on the smallies, BANG baby. He had three keepers in no time at all. That spot died so we traveled a little north to a ledge where I caught a dink smallie. Oh yea, these fish where caught on drop shots. We went back to the mounds and on the way I spotted some real nice looking flats. My partner let me hit those beautiful flats after we hit the mounds one last time. So we pulled up on the mounds and I finally get my first keeper. A nice smallie on the ol drop shot. We also saw Deren and Andrea in the distance.

So we went to the flats that I spotted and Russ let me loose on them. We started with those wonderful blades. Wham, I miss what felt like a fish and soon after Russ is got his rod bent over on our # 5 fish of the day. Yea baby as we net the fish. Soon after I nail a cull fish of 2.20 and we are feeling stoked now, but we know we still don’t have the cat in the bag yet.

We flew south so Russ could hit this sweet jig spot. I’ll have to say that it is now a very sweet jig spot as I watched Russ lose jig after jig. This spot was dead so we headed north to some shallow flats and Russ gave me the control once again. We where throughing big blades and swimbait, ( 4 eyes ) in some of the most beautiful water I have seen in a long time. I kept waiting for Russ or I to totally slam a toad and bust this tourney open, but it never happened.

This A-B-A tourney was the most fun I have had since the B.A.S.S. show last year. Russ and I are new as partners and this whole team thing is a little new for me being in $30.000 boats and all, but after our last very humbling tourney at Clear Lake last month we totally gived at this show. 1st place had 13 pounds and we had 8.23. We where write there as far as Im concerned and I know that we will definitely be contenders at the next show.

Like I said in a past post, Deren and Andrea better like second place cause Russ and I love 1st place and if it was only us two teams fishing then we would have had it, LOLOLOL
