LAST EDITED ON Jan-17-01 AT 07:29 PM (PST)

Check this drawing. My most recent project in art class (yeah, this one was legit, it was during ART class alright, not history, not algebra, not biology).

Nice picture man! Only one suggestion, put that sucker layin on my bbq grill! Dodo is my favorite fish to catch AND eat! Thanks for bringing back the memories of catching them on my trout spinning gear!! Ah, the good times! Keep up the sweet drawings.

Nice job. Ever considered graphic design or something of that nature. Can you create that stuff digitally? Maybe a career to think about.

Looks great.

Matt,
I have looked into something along those lines. I've done a couple 'web ready' graphics, colored with paint shop pro and stuff, instead of just colored by hand, and then scanned. If you go to the 'reports' link on this site, those two graphics at the bottom of the page are done by me. And on the old site, that tuna picture on the right hand margin was mine.

Nice one Brian. What medium is that? Hard to tell by the scan, but it looks like pastel. What's your favorite medium? Mine is video installation, and for fun I like charcoal or pastel. Don't know if you know it, but I am just about to finish my Master of Fine Art. Also, the reason I need to get up to SB is to go to Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum. I think that's the name anyways. It is the best and probably only gallery in your area for contemporary art. If you ever want to go check out some art let me know.

Wow, I had no idea. That's cool. Feel free to criticize. This isn't by any means my best work or anything, as a matter of fact I can point out plenty of things wrong with it. This one was actually done with colored pencil. I did some pastel stuff earlier this year, and then added some water color and stuff, but I don't like using pastel cause it's too goopy and easily smeared (at least for what I do with it). This semester my teacher said I can just do like basically whatever I want (fish, of course...) since all I ever do anyway is tye in fish to whatever project she assigns us. I haven't done any oil paintings yet, so I'm gonna do one of them. Have you seen any of Guy Harvey's stuff (I'm sure you have)? That's what I would want to get to eventually (if I really decide to get into it more). Right now I've got pretty much the basic idea of shape, anatomy, coloring, etc. but I need to work on effects, like shading, reflection of the surface of the water, motion, maybe perspective... I'll photograph/scan a couple more and put em up for you guys.

That's great that you have that kind of freedom in your class. I only took 2 art classes in High School. One was ceramics, talk about goopy, I hated it. The other was a Begining Art class. The stuff the teacher was showing I had learned in elementary school by my dad. I was totally bored. I skipped the whole color section (I'm color blind, so it was merely an execise in frustration), and I ditched the final to go surf a big South that had come in. I still managed an b+, but learned nada.

If Guy Harvey is some one you'd like to follow after then start studying his work. See if you can find some originals to look at, then start doing copies. Get books w/ super good pics of fish. Then start doing studies. Get a sketch book and just take a picture of say a dodo, then start drawing different aspects over and over. Like say the jaw structure, draw it till your bored, then do it some more. Then do it w/ different mediums in different sizes. Do some fast and gestural, do some very methodical and tight. Do this for as many areas of the fish as you can. The pick a new species. Practice, practice, practice.

If you keep this type of pratice up, by the time you are ready for undergrad you'll be able to get into a good school and probably skip some classes. Maybe sometime you can come out to my school, you can see some interesting work, and I'll load you up w/ some supplies. I have tons of stuff I don't use, that would give you a chance to experiment. Maybe we could trade for say you wrapping a blank for me?

Welcome to Brian's online gallery... har har. The newest message board of calfishing.com... j/k, here's another one for your enjoyment. I can't take full credit for this one, as I copied it off an old bassmaster magazine. It's pastel and watercolor.

Ed,
You go to upload file at the top of the page, when you post. Then you select the file type, locate your file, and hit upload file. Then it'll give you a window with a url address on it. You highlight and copy that, and paste it into your post. It'll look like a url when you're writing, but when you post, it'll be your picture.

I think it's better than the dodo actually. Maybe not as exact, but it looks more physical. Read my email, maybe this will make more sense.

Very nice picture Brian. Although I am a graphic artist I'm more of a layout type person than an actual artist (drawing) so when I see stuff like that it really impresses me.
