#136, "December 5, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

Today Matt, Summer and I headed up to the lake for some winter time bassn'. It has barely rained on the Central Coast so far this winter but the air was cold today, 26 degrees in the morning according to Dean at the Marina. Water temps are down to 55, and the lake level continues to drop, although more slowly than during the summer it would seem.
We started out by the white oak ramp, but it just didn't seem right, most of the weeds are gone now, and what's left is all brown and dead. Summer caught a small bass on a 1/4oz rattle trap to break the ice. We tried deep and shallow but nothing was forthcoming. Then we moved across the way to the coves across from the ramp. There's a little bit of timber in the water here and we flipped some 3/8oz proline jigs to it. I stuck a nice fish about 3lb which released itself at the boat as I was about to lift it in. We flipped this area for a bit before moving down to jackass canyon. Tried the AC minnow a little here and Matt threw a speed trap but we didn't find any biters. Then we looked around on some deep stuff in the main lake but couldn't find anything too interesting, so we headed back towards the marina. It was getting late by this time, so Matt went with a spinnerbait while I threw a 5" cardiffplastics swimabait. After a bit Matt thunked a nice 2 pounder on the spinnerbait. A minute later I had one about the same size on the swimbait but lost it at the boat again. We worked some small coves across from the marina and I picked up the last fish on the swimbait, a small one to end the night before our fingers froze. No real pattern today, just a fish here and a fish there. The trout plants have stalled out for the last few weeks but they should get some more pretty soon.
Below are two pics from the trip courtesy of Summer's picture taking skill and my new digital camera.
