#137, "December 6, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

Today 'twas a solo run to the lake. Arrived at noon and made the run up to the narrows to see what was happening up there. It was windy today, 15 knots or so. The narrows was calmer though and I fished just around the corner where it opens up. There's a good amount of old willows sticking out of the water now in about 8 feet of water where the old riverbed was. I threw a 1/2oz white spinnerbait for about 45 minutes but couldn't find any biters. Tried the swimbait on the edges of the sticks but they weren't interested in that either. The narrows in general was dead and I didn't have a bite in the first 2 hours of fishing. Moving down the lake I stopped off on a shallow point just as you come out of the narrows. A few casts with a 1/2oz chrome/blue rattle trap produced a nice two pounder. The fish was shallow, maybe 4 feet of water. I worked down the far side of the lake until I was across from Salsipuedes. Nothing happening so I crossed the lake to look for a spot I keep hearing about in salsipuedes where there's an underwater island in the middle of the cove. Well I finally found it and it looked good, 5 feet of water on top and 20 all around. Fished it for 45 minutes and all that resulted was a follow up on the swimbait by a small fish. I'll have to try this one again some time. Worked my way back in the cove and picked up another rattle trap fish about 1.5 pounds, shallow again on a small point.
Then it was back to the marina for some photos for the page since I was by myself. Haven't really used my livewell before but it worked out nice today. After some pics, I hit up ye olde marina cove and caught three more fish, one on a 5" big hammer and the other two on the AC Minnow. The bites were hard but the fish were pretty small with the minnow fish only about a pound and a half. Cold night again but a beautiful sunset (photo below). I love fishing Margarita in the winter time, it's so un-crowded and the fish bite just the same.
Here's the rattle trap fish

And the swimbait fish

And the sunset, very nice
