#141, "December 9, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

With rain on the way, Matt Peters and I headed up to the lake pretty early (for me anyway) and we fished hard from 10:30am until dark. We covered a lot of water and were on the trolling motor from Salsipuedes all the way to the back of the lake by the dam (yes you read that right). The action was a little slow but we ended the day with 5 fish boated out of 9 bites. Matt accounted for 4 of them with two fish on a deep little n suspending and two on a brown/brown 3/8oz proline jig with a Yamamoto twin tail trailer. I boated one on a calico bass colored 5" fish trap and lost two others at the boat. I also fell victim to the corsair (er crapsair). We found a ball of bait off this one point and I freespooled my swimbait down to the fish. I flipped the reel back in gear and was just lifting it and dropping it. Whack, I get bit and set the hook only to have the reel screech and pop out of gear!!! This is a brand new corsair 200, a replacement for my other one which I essentially destroyed. Then the kicker was that while I was pondering whether to throw the reel in the water or not and handlining my line in, I hook up a fish! I had it on for about 5 seconds before losing it. Too much. Then Matt stuck one on the jig, same spot so I felt a little better. The fish we boated were all 12-14" no real size but fun. I don't know how much rain we got, maybe and inch total. There was even some small hail for a little while. Bring your jacket.
Here's Matt with two of our fish released as always of course.
