It's hard to know where to start a fishin report on a four day weekend fishing two major lakes and driving all over Northern California but here goes...
John Lake of bass n' tubes fame stoked me by taking me along with him to fish Lake Shasta this weekend. We drove up Friday morning, stopped off in Redding at Phil's Props and California Custom Marine to say hi to some people John knew and pick up some baits. Then it was up the road to the Bridge Bay Resort where we were staying. Launched the boat, settled in to the room, and hammered down some wings and some unbelievable sauteed and deep fried mushrooms. Almost made me forget about fishing!
But fish we did and we charged out on the lake Saturday morning around 8. We threw some cranks for a little while before making the run up the Pit. John tied on a white spinnerbait and proceeded to annihilate 4 nice spots including a 3 pounder. The fish were killing it up shallow. I was impressed. We fished fast and covered a whole lotta watta. John was sticking a fish every half hour or so and I put a few in the boat too including a small largemouth. The water was 53 degrees and very clear 15 vis. By 3pm the trolling motor was done and John had stuck 16 or 17 solid spots including 2 three pounders and not one fish under 13". I had 4 I think, mostly the 13-14" variety on a 3/8oz duh! spinnerbait. It was cool and I was pumped for day 2. Back to the Whale for more wings!
Day 2 we got started at 6:30 but found that someone had unplugged John's extension cord that was charging the trolling motor battery!! Complete BS. We had some juice so we headed back up the Pit to fish for at least a couple hours. It took a while to get going but we found 'em and put a limit in the boat and missed a few. John did most of the damage again and even picked up a smallie. Windy this morning but they still bit the spinnerbait although not as agressively as the day before. We took a 4 hour lunch to let the trolling motor charge and got back out at 2pm. The skies were bright blue and the sun was out and the fish seemed to have moved off the bank or stopped biting. We switched to dragging plastic for an hour or so but no bites even on that, so at 4 we went back to the reaction bite and finally managed a fish each on shad colored crankbaits.
Oh did I mention John called in to work and told 'em he was taking Monday off? So we had plans to fish Monday morning but around 9pm decided to put the boat on the trailer and wake up early and go to Clear Lake. Stoked again!
It took 2 and a half to get to Clear and we were on the water at 9:30 or so. Skies were still bright blue and clear and it was warm and calm. What happened to it being December? Not today...
Well we ran up the lake and tried cranking the docks around monitor island - no luck. Then up by Niece to look for weed beds but they had all died off, so back down by shag rock to try spooning and no biters there either. Well we figured it was time to flip so we did that too down in Cache creek but it was not meant to be. Talked to some guys who said the night bite and early morning bite were pretty good. Oh well at least we charged it, better than sitting around wondering what it would have been like.
Huge thanks to John for setting up the trip and taking me out in his Ranger.
Here's some pics of John at Shasta with some healthy spots...
