#24, "June 14, 1999 Donner Lake and the Yuba River"

Summer and I went to Reno for a little vacation so I brought the trout rod along and on the way back to
SLO we stopped off at Donner Lake and the Yuba River by big bend. At Donner Lake it was beautiful and
sunny and we fished by the inlet to the lake. Saw some small trout jumping but didn't have any luck fishing
the pins minnow. We talked to a guy who had been trolling and caught some small kokanne as well as a 16"
mackinaw trout. We saw him catch 2 more drifting not far from us with nightcrawlers, so it would seem that
the fishing was pretty good in the lake but we didn't try too hard. Driving West on the 80 we pulled off at
the Yuba river because it just looked really really good. I cast the pins minnow into a slow moving pool a
couple of times, had a nice brown that looked about 16" come up chase it for about 15 feet and finally nail it
only to get off the hook a second later. That was all the action I had there. The river is fast flowing and has a
good amount of water in it. Although it looked fishy, I got the feeling that there weren't a ton of fish in
there and definitely no planters in the area I was in. This was backed up by a man we talked to who said they
planted browns in there 3 years ago but that many had died in El Nino related mud slides.
