#4426, "Castaic Lower Lake, June 16th"

Friend and I hit Castaic lower lake for 4 hours Sunday. I working a pop-r on the rising fish to no luck, so I tried split shotting a grub, but the weed growth was too much for the grub, so I went to drop shotting Oxblood.

And Got a 4.6# 21" fish. My friend also nailed a 1.5# dropshotting Oxblood also.

We also called the caltip line after a I confronted a guy who kept a 15 1/2 large mouth (Castaic is 18" and a 2 fish limit) He argued that a large mouth wasn't a black bass....Oh well I hope he got a ticket to prove he was wrong.

I FISHED THE LAKE TONIGHT AND THE WIND WAS HOWLING. THE WATER IS UP HIGHER THAN IVE SEEN IN A WHILE. BEFORE THEM WIND PICKED UP I HAD A 4 POUNDER HIT MY FISH TRAP IN SHAD COLOR. ALSO GOT A TROUT. THERE ARE ALOT OF BLUE GILL IN THE LAKE WRITE NOW. THE TROUT I CAUGHT ALSO HAD A BABY BASS HANGING OUT OF HIS MOUTH. ITS KINDA WEIRD SEEING A BASS IN A TROUTS MOUTH AFTER THROWING A 10" OSPREY.

Also, thanks for using Caltip. It sounds like this guy actually knew what he was doing. I run into stuff like that ocassionally, and it ticks me off.
Just this weekend about 4 guys were more than happy to tell a guy not to keep a foul hooked 22 1/2" Halibut, but he didn't pay any attention and proceeded to stomp on it's head. Well, we didn't have to call Caltip because about then the Sheriff came down to give him a ticket after having watched the whole thing from the day parking area.
Did I mention this was at New Brighton Beach and the guy didn't have a license? Sometime along then the sheriff was told that the fish had been foul hooked, which the sheriff said thanks for the input and that he had seen that from the parking lot. When the Sheriff found out that he didn't have a license he asked what other fishing gear he had other than the rod, and the guy started to say something and stopped. Well, the officer told him he was confiscating all gear that he claimed so the guy clammed up.
The Sheriff took his rod (G. Loomis with a Calcutta 400te on it I think) which was still attached to the fish and the rest of his gear was left behind as he was escorted up to his car. The guys who warned him divided up his left behind gear between them. I was in my tube, well off the beach when he caught the fish, but I got to see the rest pretty good. The four guys divided up 20-30 swimbaits, some Krocodiles, Bomber long-A's and 3 Pencil Poppers, all in 2 Plano boxes in a backpack, with some other standard stuff like pliers etc. I'd say that was an expensive lesson to learn especially if you consider the whopper of a fine he probably got. Let's see, 1 count of keeping a foul-hooked gamefish, 1 count of keeping an undersized gamefish, 1 count of mutillating a gamefish for the purpose of stretching it to legal length, and 1 count of fishing without a license. I'm no expert but I'd say $2K+ sounds like the right neighborhood so far, and he didn't get to keep the fish either. Lastly, is cussing out an officer of the law illegal?

Anyone know the fine for catching a undersize Bass in Castaic?
Or a fine for not having a license?

While fishing at Silverwood Lake in '98, my license came off my hat. I got a ticket and went to court to fight it with my reciept and a photocopy of the logbook from the Kmart I bought it from showing the date of purchase. The Judge dropped the fishing without a license ticket ($973.00) and stuck me with the then new "fishing without a licence visible on person" fine of $248.00. I thought it was lame then and I still think the Judge was a bit harsh. Oh well, what are you going to do but pay it, and learn to use the pin-on license holders, not the cheap clip-on ones.

I just hope DFG came out...I tried to get Castaic to send a life guard out but they wouldn't. Is there a way I can find out if this guy got nailed or not?

I think he means the fish was snagged. I'm not completely clear if there are any fish you can legally snag, but I know that trout and bass must willing take the hook in mouth.

Hmmm....I hooked a red-ear on the eyelid some how but let him go. I guess that was good because it may have been illegal to keep him, eh?

When I was at Yucaipa Regional Park earlier this year I saw many guys snagging Trout after Trout with Jigs, so I got out my cell phone and called the Front Gate, they came down and kicked all of the guys out right away, they also took pictures of the anglers as well.

Snagging happens a lot at Yucaipa, espically on saturdays during Trout Season, sad but true.

I'm hearing different stories about the fine for not having a license. Anyone else heard of other people getting fined?
