#6024, "Any Interest in Baja reports on this board?"

Mike & Josh were joined by Mike Ramirez on the first trip of the season to Ensenada. We launched the Striper early 5/11 with hopes of checking outside for albies but the ground swell & probability of afternoon wind kept us inside for bass. Salsipuendes held 58.5 deg. water which dropped quickly to 55.5 as you went N. around the point. That made the decision for us to work S. which paid off in a decent pick on 25+ all quality calico’s & 1 nice sandbass to 5 lbs.

6" MC Swimbaits rigged on 3/4 0z heads with 20lb line fished on our Leapin’ Bass Custom Calico Rods were the ticket, outfishing the sardines 4/1. We started to think about dinner so we headed to a nearby hardbottom area in 150 ft. for a quick pick on various bottom critters for dinner. 2 drifts produced plenty of dinner in the shape of lings, reds, & salmon grouper. When we turned down the stereo & turned on the radio we heard about some yellowtail biting @ the N. end of Todos Santos so we abandon bass fishing. We got there in time to see one tail caught before it turned into a bonito bite. The area was thick with red crabs & all sorts of life so we knew where we wanted to go in the morning.

Sunday we went straight for the yellows at the N. end of the island where we were met by hundreds of diving birds. 2 sm. purple/black rapalas along with a yozuri weren’t in the water 5 min. before Mike D’s yozuri starts screaming. It was a good 15 min. before a 20 lb yellow was hanging from the gaff. None of our sardines got bit so we started trolling again, 10 minutes later it was my turn. The 1st yellowtail of the season is always an eye opener, every winter we seem forget how strong those yellows are. Just as I landed my fish Mike D’s sardine was exploded on right on the surface. Mike R. followed up with another baitfish both hooked on 20 lb line & were quite a battle. These were very strong 15–20 lb class fish that were tough to keep out of the rocks on 30 lb in 70 ft of water. For fun we decided to slow troll sardines on the 15 lb tackle which resulted in a 20 minute battle which I lost to the tail compliments of the rocks. Put the boat on the trailer @ 10:00 am.

I can't remember if I posted the link here or not. Headed down to Baja over spring break with 4 other guys and our kayaks. Made it down to Punta Abreojos on the Pac side and Mulege on the Cortez. Check the link for pics and the whole story. Awesome trip :) Sorry if it's a repeat post.

Adam

Definitely keep the reports coming T.S..

Once Brian gets a yak we'll be heading down that way for some jumping grouper. And Brian, it's really just a small conspiracy to get you into a yak. Once you go yak, you'll never go back.

Awesome trip report Adam. See you Sunday.

I know once I buy a yak I'll never go back to a tube, and that's why I don't want one! haha I always thought I'd buy a kickboat before I bought a kayak, but since I will be pretty far away from Bass N Tubes for a couple years and awfully close to jumping grouper, that plan might get altered...

And if you're ever back in SD and want to try one out, just drop me a line. I got a couple spare boats I'd be happy to loan ya for the day. Nothing like a tow job from a yellowtail when you're sitting on a little piece of hollow plastic :) Mexico with a 'yak is just awesome.

Awesome!! Thanks for the report on Ensenada. My friend John and I always make a couple of trips starting around June every year, so it's great to hear that the Yellows are starting to make some noise. Looking forward to heading down and gettin' into them there Yellowmatail. Can't wait. Thanks again.

I agree, keep the reports coming. Not only does it make a good read, but it also keeps my fishing dreams alive. I have a $25 Wal-Mart set-up that I use mainly on the beaches of SoCal. One day, I hope to upgrade big time and go for some REAL fish.
