#6293, "Grubing for Barred Surf Perch"
|
OK all you experts out there... I want to take my little Shimano Spin Rig down to the beach here in Oceanside this weekend and and try my luck grubin with the ol' Carolina Rig for those fiesty little Bardies.
My question is... what size and color would be my best bet. Do I want a 1/2 ounce egg sinker? I'm going with my Shimano Sahara and Charrus 7'6" Grafite with 6# Maxima.
Muchas Gracias!

AZTECWIN TIME TO REPAY SOME ADVISE. 1-1/2 TO 3 INCH GRUBS WORK BEST ANYTHING MOTOROIL OR PUMKINSEED WITH FLAKES. SOMETIMES CLEAR WITH RED FLAKES WORK SIMULATING RED CRABS. SIZE 4 TO 6 HOOKS WORK BEST. SELECT YOUR WEIGHT BY THE TIDE 1/4 TO 1/2 OZ WORK WELL.HOPE THIS HELPS YOU OUT;

I wonder when using the grubs do you really need to use an egg sinker or a corolina rig. what would the results be if you just used the grub with the lead head?

ANCHOVIE, USING A LEAD HEAD WILL WORK BUT IT WILL NOT GIVE YOU THR FREE FLOWING MOVEMENT YOU WOULD LIKE IN THE SURF.

1.5" Kalin grubs in Perch Madness are the killers if you can find them, motoroil red flake is another good one. Also try the 'Lil Craw from Riverside plastics in natural.
C-rig w/ 1/4" - 1/2" bullet or egg sinker, #6 livebait hook, 12" floro leader. I've found swivels make the best connectors as Carolina Keepers slip once sand gets in. Leader length can go up to 18", but I found at that length they just tangle too easy.
Lube bait with Procure Calico Coctail or Hotsauce and you're good to go. Remember there are tons of fish real close. I catch at least half of my BPs in less than 2' of water.

Looks like you've already got some good advice on grub colors. The Mojo, Kalin, Yamamoto and Berkley power grubs work well. You also might want to vary the retieve a little. I used to primarily slow retrieve and let the current carry the grub naturally where other food settles(works well), but now I also medium retrieve to cover more ground especially when trying to find the fish. Good luck, the surf fishing has been great recently!

Thanks Surfan,
I was shopping at Boss in Vista today and got my egg sinkers, hooks, florocarbon leader line but their selection of grubs was very poor. No Kalins... the Yams were all 4" and above. Nothing with Motoroil or Pumpkin Seed. I'm going to Tackle Town and Pacific Coast Bait and Tackle manana. Hopefully they will be better supplied.

Those Lil craws are at Walmart. The reddish/natural seems the best color. Kalin is out of business so what ever you find consider yourself lucky. Small tubes will work, but don't stay on too well if the surf is active.

Ed,
That is what they told me at Boss today that Kalins are out of business. I will check out Walmart as well as some other stores.
Thanks!
