I know this isn't the same but when I was on my white seabass trip 2 months back after we limited out, we went around picking on the shallow water fish. I was useing dead squid and a #2 light wire mutu-Circle hook and kinda carolina rigging it with a split shot and a 3/80z sliding sinker and buddy I was kicking everybodys behind so I gave away a bunch of them and then we all started bring them to the boat. We were in no more than 15 of water and when I got my tap I'd just start reeling in and the rod would sort of load up and they were on....I'd give-em a try.

personally I dont like the owner super mutus, unless they have removed the hook ofset since I last used them out of 10 fish hooked 6-7 of them were hooked on the upper palate, nowadays I opt for the matsuo ones, first of all because they are way cheaper than owners and they have no offset, I use a lot of these on the bass, rockfish and tuna, heck they've worked on cudas too.

what i was curious about was on their ability to get corbina, I've been on a long dry spell to consider experimenting with them only to find that the one taker in a while swam off because my choice of hooks.

I like to fish the small thin wire circle hooks when I use sand crabs. This time of year I use Sand crabs almost exclusively. Recently I started using Hawian Circle hooks and have found they work even better. I've found that with such a thin wire hook you have to keep the crab moving or else even the small crabs will dig back in the sand making it tough for the corbina to find your bait. It's important to keep the crab moving to avoid the crab diging into the sand. It sounds like a hasle but the corbina will respond much better to the more lively baits. I believe it appears more natural to them. The 4lb line doesn't hurt eighter. I wouldn't recommend circle hooks for the grub. When fishing the grub I use a small off set hook also thin wire for that.

The real benifit of the circle hook is that the majority of the fish will get hooked in the corner of the mouth which will lower the mortality rate. This is assuming your planning to release your fish.

Good luck,

Jerry G

Try the Owner Mosquito hooks too, which have kind of a semi-circle to them. (I hate the mutu lites because of the offset. I had the same problem of always palate hooking calicos.) I haven't used the mosquitos for surf, but last week used the #4 hooks extensively at Lake Powell for catfish and 10lb surface boiling carp (whoo-hoo!). Had 4 young kids fishing with bait. Not one ever set the hook, just reeled tight. Must of had 30-40 fish hooked in the corner of the mouth EVERY time. Expensive hooks, though.

In SoCal I know Turners has them, Sport Chalet, and probably most tackle shops. I've found them in the drop shot hook/sinker section. Don't know about Walmart or other big box retailers.

Check out the hooks at http://www.ownerhooks.com/newproducts.html Scroll down 1/4 of a page. It says they are "self setting". Seems to be true from my modest experience.

At under $2 for 6 light wire uncurbed circle hooks in black chrome with long Flourocarbon snells (I think 2') they're a bargain. I haven't tried them in the surf and we don't have Corb's this far N. anyways, but 4 kids didn't have any trouble with getting Trout and small Catfish on them.
