I know I'm a few days late with the post but here goes anyway. July 4th, El Segundo bch, 6:15 - 9:30. Clear skies. 2-3 foot waves. The peak low tide was at 7:30 at a -0.1.
When we first arrived as I was getting sand crabs I watched as a nice size Corbina swam up in less than 6 inches of water within 10ft of me. I rigged up and threw my line out and within minutes I had a fish on. No Corb though, small 8" BSP. The next 1/2 hour produced two more BSF. At about 7:00am the sun was already out shining really good on the water. The bite was done. The next 2 1/2 hours I got only one more BSP. Heres the kicker. All morning I watched as Corbinas swam up into 4-6 inches of water hunting sand crabs. I threw softshells, grubs, and even a few mussells (which I hardly use, due to the fact that I can never get them to stay on my hook). NADA. No luck. Lots of fish visible, but couldn't hook up.
Anyways, I've concluded that A) The minus tide did not make a difference as far as fish being there. I think with good water movement to stir things up the fish will come. Even on a minus tide. B) Even if the fish come, it doesn't mean they'll bite. I think someones signature says it best.."its called fishing, NOT catching" something like that.
As usual, fish released. Had a good time fishing with my brother. He got a few perch and posibly a Corb but his line snapped off at the leader.
Hey Kman I fished the surf on the morning of the 4th. I was fishing with Shark bait and we ended the morning at about 11 a.m. bait was sand crabs which where caught individually as needed then fished on a Carolina rig tied up with 4lb line.
It was an average morning. Most corbs were caught working sight fish. It can get much better you just have to stick it out with the light line and small crabs prefferably small soft shells with eggs will get bit best. If your not catching keep moving until you find moving water. When you find moving water fish will soon follow. Once the sun is up in the sky and it starts getting bright the action will back down considerably. The best you can hope for is overcast conditions.
JerryG "7 corbs"...."average day" That would be a dream day for me. Anyways, I'm a bit curious as to what size/type of hooks you use. I've been using size 6 octopus hooks and circle hooks. Also, I agree that overcast conditions usually produce better results. thanks, Kman

I went out today and it was only ok fishing. I avoided the perch and much as possible and caught 4 corbina up 19'' and 6 barred perch. A couple of friends did good on the perch. Left the beach at 10:30am. Kman if you were only a little more down the beach that day you would have seen us. Oh yeah there was some kelp in water today. More then what I've seen in the last month. See you on the beach. Anthony
