#11968, "Shelter and Dana reports"

Date: 4-26-04

Launch and Return: Shelter Island, 6:00am - 12:30

Totals: 15+ legal, at least as many sub-legals; mostly spots a few sand mix of sand and spots. 1 18" halibut. 1 Short-fin Corvina about 24".

Baits: white/yellow Avenger blade took my best spot of the day, 2.5lbs+. white w/silver flake skirted 1/2oz Slip-jig w/ twin-tailed zipper for trailer got the but, the Corvina, and a short and a legal sand bass. Drop-shot was the ticket. 4.75" Beavertail in Oxblood did best, but any color/style (non-bulky).

Scent: my own brew

Conditions: Very little tidal movement, had to look for the current (steep shelves). Water was just barely off-color, temp around 63º. Typical Shelter wind, nice until around 10 and by 12 it was going full force.

Special Comments: No fish until 8:30 when I switched to the blade. Got the big one of the day on the first cast. Missed another on the second cast. No more for the rest of the day. The 'but hammered the slip-jig about 3' off the bow. It had followed the jig up and I stopped winding, figuring it would just swim away. Fun fight for such a small fish.

Met up with Eagle Eye coming in.

Areas fished: Launch area to the point past Bahia and back. Stayed inside 40' all morning.

Date: 5-1-04

Launch and Return: Mother's Beach (Dana Point), 6:30am - 12. Fished out on the point.

Totals: 3 legals (2 calico, 1 sand), 3 shorts

Baits: Blade, no love. Slip-jig, short bites only. Heavy and/or bigger plastics short bites at best. Smaller slimmer bait, on smaller head got all fish but the sand bass. It was deep and ate a 4.5" grub(the new mold).

Scent: mine

Conditions: Nice paddle out to the point, offshore breeze at my back and side. Blowing pretty hard by 10. Coming back in channel it was plain nasty (wind was accelerating as it came over and around point). No current on the Point, water was clear and about 61º. Had the fish tight to the kelp and sluggish (or skitish), Probably missed a lot of bites (need to work on being aware of pressure bites)

Special Comments: Best fish (2.5-3lbs) ate a 4.75" beavertail in Orange Flash (lots of silver hologram and orange flake). Best part was that I watched it slide out from under a kelp frond, suck it up and cruise back towards the cover. Set the hook and it wasn't too happy. Fished Spanish Rock on the way back. Got my pants pulled down a few times, plus a couple short biters. Got short #3 on misc. kelps just outside harbor mouth, Then DFG cruised up and checked my license. They were nice guys.

This was Perry's (Allkayakfishing.com) Fish 'n Que. Met lots of new anglers (new to me). Had a good time. Best part was test paddling the Malibu Extreme. It was fully hatched, but not loaded. Noticed right away how fast it was off the blocks. Blew away my Cabo, and probably my old Tourer too. Sustained speed was good too. Turned very easy. Seemed to track well in the high wind. It does drift fast, but at least not backwards (my Cabo does both). Very comfortable both to paddle and while straddling. It was added to my wish list before I hit shore.
