Surffished this morning on the rising high tide using small pieces of giant squid for bait. Good conditions with minimal swell, wind, and kelp. Caught and released 15 Barred Perch (all hand sized) and 2 small Leopard Sharks. Saw no Corbina at all but the sandcrabs are showing...most are the micro crabs. Glad I made it down there.

Todd, you actually went fishing? lol! Sounds like you had a nice session. Be sure to get out more.

That was my first time surffishing in months! Glad to get into a hot barred perch bite even if they were all on the small size. Hopefully the Corbina action will pick up soon.

I need some help. I am a new member to the forum. My Brother and I have been fishing off the rocks in Laguna Beach for a couple weeks now and have not caught a thing. We have used raw shrimp and anchovies. I have used artificial lures and nothing. Are we fishing in the wrong spot or using the wrong baits? If anyone has advise I would appreciate it.

I used a hi/lo setup (size 6 baitholder hooks) with a 2 oz pyramid sinker on 12 pound p-line which is really too heavy...unless I hook up something big. If fishing the rocks off Laguna, I would suggest using as light of weight as possible (to prevent snags) and small baitholder hooks(size 6 work well). A hi/lo would work, but you will snag more. Due to this I normally use a split-shot crimped about a foot and a half above my hook with a small sliding sinker above that. Small pieces of bait work best for most of the reef fishes...the calico's will hit the halved or even whole chovies.

Thanks for your time. I guess we are going way too heavy. We are using 20lb Test Line, 1 to 2 Hooks. Weight varies from 1oz to 3oz (depending on the current). I will give the #6 hooks a shot with lighter test.

...you can even still fish with the heavier line (or you will lose the rare big calico's from the rocks), but make sure you use lighter weights and smaller hooks since most of the fish off the rocks (Opaleye,Perch,Garabaldi(illegal to keep),etc.) have smaller mouths with the exception of sculpin,rockfish, and bass.

What a difference. Went out at the same place (Fishermans Cove) in Laguna but used #6 Hooks and 1oz weights on 12lb test and caught the following: 2 Perch, 1 Lepord Shark, 1 Sculpin (I think), 1 Calico, 1 Fish I don't know what kind it was. All were small and all were released but I had a blast. Weather could have been better. I had the Fish and Game guys come down and ask for a license which I provided. Really nice guys though (I was surprised). They told me that later in the day over at Table Rock someone caught a 14" Sand Bass. Thanks a lot for the input. It really paid off. Any other updates in the area?

You did better than I did the last few times out where I just got some catch/release walleye perch and a baby calico bass. Most of the fish off the rocks will be the smallish ones with the rare large bass. Glad my suggestions helped.

It's had been slow for me. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday produced nothing. The surf and tide have been high so fishing from the rocks has been tough not to mention the Lifguards to contest with. Had BEAUTIFUL weather Saturday and Sunday though so that was a plus. I'm itching to get out on a long range boat and catch some tuna. My company use to take us out on the "Champ" out of San Diego but I haven't done that in a couple years now. Any suggestions on a 1-2 day boat?
