I finally found some time to go out after the Albies. We launched out of Mission Bay at 4am to head out the 302 area. We dropped the jigs in the water and started dragging. 5 minutes into trolling we lost the bait pump and watched a scoop and a half die on us x(

We trolled around for a few hours and steadliy watched the water temps drop from 66 to 65 to 64.6. As soon as we found the 64 degree water we had a jig strike. First albie!! We marked the spot and began to box the area until we had a double strike! I dropped back the Hammer on the slide hoping for a third (since we had no bait) and was not rewarded. We land the fish and go back to trolling. Within 5 minutes we had another albie on the line. Things were looking good and then the Bonita moved in. We caught a few Bonita and then nothing for hours. The bite had died on us so we looked for patties.

No patties in the 30 mile run back in. We ended up with 4 albies and a handful of bonita. Albies were 18-30 pounds. With all the chatter on the radio it seems that we were one of the top boats in the area. Maybe if the guys spent less time asking for spots they could have caught more fish. My buddy was on a 1 1/2 day they same time and they had 7 for the boat. It just seems that Sunday was not the day to fish for albies.

glad you guys got them, gotta love the guys on the radio begging for colors, numbers, whatever- go find some fish and put them in the boat- I have less confidence in colors trolling for tuna then I do for bass, put the jigs out and open your eyes, lots of these guys seem to think the color of the jig is what makes a good trip- it's all about the presentation, finding the fish, whatever- talk to five boats and they'll have five different ways they slayed them, just like a bass tournament - I'm not certain, but I'm pretty sure if you don't have the black and purple jet head the last guy on the radio caught them on, it's not going to ruin your trip- sorry to rant, just sick of tools on the radio that can't go out and find some fish- isn't that what it's all about?

Glad you guys got them!

I agree but it just seems that they really like the black and purple on the overcast days. Then again I have caught them on pink/white, avacado, abortion...if they are hungry then they will eat it.

One of the guys at work went yesterday just south of where we went on Sunday. They had 10 albies and some smaller grade YT. They saw a swordy on the way in and threw to it. I guess it just hauled a** away from them. I am still searching for my first billfish. One day I suppose
