I will be going to Catalina next week and some info on fishing near shore, best places, etc would be great! Might be fishing via kayak. Last year I fished from the jetty, had a great time. I noticed a few locals fishing in the evening. The set-up was a large bubble-float with a special fly that was made by a local. The fly was offset about 4-5 feet from the bubble. The fly was a Christmas tinsle design. We had a great time with the Bonitas schooling thru--- at one time a double hook-up!!!Not bad just fishing from the jetty!!! Thanks in advance your help is appreciated!!

hey jeff,
i fish catalina every summer and it looks i and possibly rob and summer will be going the week after you- but anyway. there's a big like concrete pier thing right next to an old boat ramp where the express boats come in. if you get off the boat and walk to your left, you'll be there. fish right next to the crane. i've caught sheephead, calico, some decent perch and halfmoon and although i haven't caught any, have seen bonita cruising through and stuff. throw the plastics or whatever. if you can, try to get some of those little red crabs from a tackle shop. they move in every winter and all the fish in the area just gorge on them. i caught a nice calico on one last year. hope this helps.

jeff,
one more thing i forgot to mention- try tubing/kayaking the harbor at night. there's usually some seabass or at least some barracuda or something. another thing is, i don't know if they got the bait barge back there yet, it got washed up by el nino and they haven't had one for a while. if they have one, it'll be right by that jetti you fished off of. definitely fish the bait barge. the calico just hold right underneath it, you'll whack em. good luck.
